It drifts between states—shifting, unresolved— trying to find identity under all the noise, but never quite being free from external forces.&nbsp; &nbsp;e(x)ternal is displayed on a screen, with two metal podiums in front of the screen. Users are invited to watch how the visual is swirling and changing, ever in flux, even without interaction, showing how uncertain my identity is already when I’m alone. Then, if the right podium is touched, the turbulence of the movement is increased and the fluidity becomes more chaotic. If the left podium is touched, the colors shift darker, and more texture and grit is added to the piece. These changes show how external influences like friends and family play a large part in my uncertainty and indecision. A third, special interaction is triggered when two people are touching both podiums and also touching each other (e.g. by holding hands). The piece rapidly changes color with each touch. This emphasizes the power of close connection with others and its ability to influence my identity. technical details Software: TouchDesigner, ESP32 (Arduino IDE)Hardware: Mac Mini, ESP32, (generic) MPR121 capacitive touch Each podium has an ESP32 and a capacitive touch sensor connected to the podium metal itself. In graph theory, an Eulerian cycle is a path that starts and ends on the same vertex, and uses each edge only once. I knew I wanted to learn TouchDesigner because of my interest in projection and LED mapping, but throughout the 100 days I ended up really enjoying making generative audio-reactive visuals. This page shows a few of my favorites in gif form, but you can click through to see the full video with audio. Following YouTube tutorials, choosing colors that I liked, finding parameters to make audio-reactive or to tweak to be my own, picking out the audio - these little habits in my daily practice this summer meant so much to me. I obviously learned a lot about TouchDesigner and the code-like "logic" behind each network. But beyond the technical learnings, the daily practice taught me so much about myself. The installation changes to reflect the time of day in that time zone and the turbulence of the water using the tide API data. Humans are naturally drawn to glossy and shiny objects due to our evolutionary need of searching for water. The reflection of light on water sparks our interest and holds our attention. Most population-dense areas are around bodies of water. Water evokes a sense of calm and relaxation. We used Dall-E and Midjourney to create two surreal desert landscapes. The physical book was created with layers of laser cut paper and cardboard. Kindred Hearts is an interactive LED installation designed to evoke joy, connection, and a sense of shared magic. Inspired by the prompt above, this piece invites festival-goers to dance together under heart-shaped LED arches. Each arch features two smaller heart-shaped controllers, inscribed with “Pick me up and dance with me!” When participants interact by moving the controllers, animations within the heart accelerate, and a glowing progress bar begins to fill with color, reflecting their combined energy. Currently, she is a post-doc fellow / research resident at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), and previously earned her B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. Her work aims to explore the intersection of visual, sound, and emotion. Her favorite medium is light (LEDs and projection mapping), and she uses her electrical background to create custom circuitry for interactive experiences.&nbsp; Jess has a wide range of experience, which informs her passion for multidisciplinary work. Previously, she worked as an electrical engineer in the automotive industry overseeing wire harness production for vehicles, and creating prototype vehicles with new technologies. Jessica is also a classically trained pianist, and has taught, accompanied, and sang in Virginia Tech’s Women’s Chorus, culminating in a performance at Carnegie Hall.
